Photo entries at the fair

Here are the results of my entries in the photography competition at the Middle Tennessee District Fair in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
There are about 15 different categories and each person can enter one photo in each category.
I entered a total of nine this year.  I know that sounds like a lot, but everyone else in line has a stack too. Last year I entered four and earned one 1st place ribbon.

Here are all of my entries.

1st Place in Computer Manipulated
(I did more enhancing on this one than usual, so that's why I put it in that category)
Here is the SOOC.

1st Place in Architecture

3rd Place in Seascape/Waterscape

3rd Place in Skyscape

The rest didn't win anything, but I'm extremely proud of what I did get!!!

This building is called "The Batman building" and is in downtown Nashville.  This photo was from our August visit which was just for fun.  Little did we know at that time that we would be back in Nashville a month later for not so fun activities.

The first thing I saw when we entered the waiting room at Vanderbilt was a great view of downtown Nashville with this building front and center.  So, this building will be forever etched in my memory.  I only hope it will be a good memory.  I'm getting sappy, aren't I.

Fair Preview

Saturday, the first day of fall, we went to the fair in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee to enter my photos into the exhibit.  Several things were getting set up, but the bulk of the rides were probably still at the previous location.

The rabbit judging was ongoing

and so was the chicken judging.
I don't know the criteria, but these all look the same to me, especially from this viewpoint.

Would you believe that I have never eaten a funnel cake?
I save my fried dough eating for Cafe Du Monde and Krispy Creme.

I do always get a greasy corndog, though.

Today we go to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Please send good thoughts.

Music City

Downtown Nashville is full of bars and honky tonks and just about all of them have live entertainment.

Frugal pumpkins

Can you believe that these two pumpkins are from last year?
Yes, it is true.  The white one stayed in the garage all winter and the little striped one stayed in the house.
All of their buddies deteriorated one by one throughout the year.
I just can't throw them out at the end of the season when they are still good.

Barn Charm 104

More views from the golf course on the last day of summer.

Nuts and twigs

I have been making granola at home the last few months.
(I think of Wilford Brimley when I see granola.  If you are younger than about forty-five you might not know what I'm talking about. lol)

It's easy.  I read several recipes on the internet and just made up my own from there.

Mix together in a large bowl:

1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup vegetable or olive oil (yes, olive oil is OK.  This last batch I used half of each, but I have used just olive oil and it was fine)
1/4 cup brown sugar

Then mix in:

3 cups oatmeal.  I used part oatmeal and part multigrain cereal shown in the photo.
Nuts of your choice and the amount of your choice.  Unsalted is better.  I use plain almonds, sumflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.  Walnuts are good for you also.

Mix this well until everything is coated.  The cereal will create lumps with the honey mixture so just keep breaking them up until it is consistent in texture.

Spread on baking sheet.

Bake at 275 degrees for about 20 minutes.  Stir at least one time during the 20 minutes.

NOTE:  It will be sticky after the twenty minutes.  Don't put it back in the oven or it will get too brown.  It will get dry after it cools.

Allow to cool on pan.

Add dried fruit of your choice after it is cool.

Pack and in keep in freezer.  I use canning jars.

And in my bowl with plain greek yogurt, honey, and cinnamon, dried cranberries and apricots. I just add dried fruit to my bowl each time rather than to the entire batch.  Of course, I stirred it up before eating, but spared you a photo since it isn't that appetizing to look at.

Tattoos on Broadway

Downtown Nashville, Tennessee, U. S. A.

What do you see first?  A stately old building, or a tattoo parlor.

salad : salit : sallat

It's pretty.

Contrary to what some of you are probably thinking about living in the deep south, I've never eaten poke salad and we don't grow it on purpose.  I do love collards, kale, turnip greens and we do grow them.

It and the morning glories are growing wild along the fence around my husband's garden.
As Kathy commented on another post earlier this week, I think the grasshoppers are having a feast.

What town has burrows on the sidewalks?

Yes, burrows everywhere.  And, of course burrow poop too.
